The Deaths of December Reviews

3.5
“In Susi Holiday’s thriller The Deaths of December, the holiday season in London takes a dark turn when a series of gruesome "human advent calendars" begin appearing across the city. Each day leading up to Christmas, a new victim is discovered in a macabre display, forcing Detective Sergeant Becky Greene and DI Eddie Carmine into a desperate race against time to stop a killer who seems to be following a twisted countdown. While the premise of a festive serial killer mystery sounds gripping, my personal experience with the story was unfortunately quite a struggle. As someone who does not typically reach for thrillers, I went into this hoping for a page-turner that would convert me to the genre, but I found it very difficult to get into the flow of the narrative. The multiple points of view felt confusing rather than atmospheric, and the large cast of characters made it hard for me to keep track of who was who or where the story was actually heading. I felt disconnected from the plot for a significant portion of the book, though the pace did seem to pick up around the sixty percent mark. However, that momentum didn't last, and by the final stretch of the novel, my interest began to wane again. The ending left me more baffled than satisfied, and because I had lost interest by that point, I found myself skimming the details rather than absorbing the resolution. It seems I might have missed some vital clues, as I still don't quite understand how everything tied together.”
