After saving the world from the diabolical Ace of Anarchy, Ella, Brigit, and Jason return for year three at the Arcanum Training Institute. But the heroes' return is far from welcoming. Ella’s big reveal last year threw everything into chaos, unearthing long-buried secrets and unwinding a twisted trail of deceit. As tensions rise between Marvellers and Conjurors, Ella realizes that the only way to end the chaos is to unveil the truth about what happened to the Conjure architect once and for all. To do that, she’ll have to enlist the help of the living and the dead. As they plunge deeper into the truth, the search leads them to the Underworld and the Cards of Deadly Fate—an impenetrable prison for supervillains.

But before Ella can figure out how it’s all connected, the tension between magical worlds boil over, threatening everyone around her. Will Ella and her friends uncover the truth about the missing architect before their worlds collide?

“Oh wow!!! I wish I had the conclusion in my grubby little hands RIGHT NOW after that ending!!! Also the death of Masterji Thakur almost sent me over the edge!! THEN haaving that ending follow blew my mind. I can’t wait to read the conclusion of one of my favorite series!!!”
Loudly Crying Face“Another great installment of the world of the Conjureverse! I thought the tension between Ella and Brigit was very natural when you get to that age and you and your best friend are starting to grow into different people, and sometimes that requires some time away from one another. I think it’s a great lesson to teach young readers that friendships require some effort to stay in touch even when separated. It also does a great job showing that, although you may have a lot going on in your life that you want to focus on, you have to remember that so do your friends around you. And sometimes to be a good friend you have to take a step back from your priorities and be there for your friends when they need someone to listen to them or help them out. When Dhonielle Clayton had the dedication at the beginning to Holly Black, saying that she appreciates her push to explore darker themes and elements I was like “Uh Oh.” And then we got to the last, like, 10% of the book and I was like “UH OH.” Honestly I was thinking to myself “Well, we haven’t seen his body so maybe this is some sort of trick or ruse” but then they show his urn and his ghost and I get that feeling in your throat like it’s got thick from an oncoming sob. Masterji Thakur was such a great character, I’m really going to miss him. But knowing how much he meant to Ella, I know she’s going to carry him with her for the rest of the series. One thing that I will say, is that I was kind of expecting the Cards of Deadly Fate to be much more involved in the plot, instead of really just appearing at the end. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the pacing of the rest of Ella’s mystery solving was great, and I love that Lapine made his debut in Ella’s life now, I was just confused by the title of the book with how little those cards were actually present. Of course, it could really be called that for the whole murder mystery and character death, I was just hoping for more of the cards.”
