The Dead Cat Tail Assassins

By P. Djèlí Clark
The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djèlí Clark digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The Dead Cat Tail Assassins are not cats.

Nor do they have tails.

But they are most assuredly dead.

Nebula and Alex Award winner P. Djèlí Clark introduces a brand-new world and a fantastical city full of gods and assassins.

An NPR "Books We Love" choice of 2024, Indie Next Pick, LibraryReads Top Ten Selection, Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance Selection, and Best-Of Book according to BookRiot, and ALA/YALSA Alex Award winner

Eveen the Eviscerator is skilled, discreet, professional, and here for your most pressing needs in the ancient city of Tal Abisi. Her guild is strong, her blades are sharp, and her rules are simple. Those sworn to the Matron of Assassins—resurrected, deadly, wiped of their memories—have only three unbreakable vows.

First, the contract must be just. That’s above Eveen’s pay grade.

Second, even the most powerful assassin may only kill the contracted. Eveen’s a professional. She’s never missed her mark.

The third and the simplest: once you accept a job, you must carry it out. And if you stray? A final death would be a mercy. When the Festival of the Clockwork King turns the city upside down, Eveen’s newest mission brings her face-to-face with a past she isn’t supposed to remember and a vow she can’t forget.

Beaming Face with Smiling Eyes“The Dead Cat Tail Assassins is fast, bloody, and ridiculously fun. We’ve got an undead assassin with no memory, a city brimming with secrets, and a goddess pulling the strings… what’s not to love? Eveen is sharp, deadly, and just the right amount of unhinged, and the mix of fantasy, horror, and sci-fi elements makes this world feel fresh and unpredictable. The action hits hard, the humor is dark, and the story moves at breakneck speed. If anything, I just wanted more… more time with the characters, more depth to the world, and maybe a little extra room for the plot to breathe. But for a novella? This absolutely delivers. If you like assassins, divine deals, and a touch of the grotesque, you’re in for a wild ride.”
“Some plot points were interesting but it wasn’t executed well in my opinion. Also, the dialogue wasn’t the greatest.”
