The Daylight Gate
ByPublisher Description
Less than a decade after the infamous Gunpowder Plot nearly took his life, King James I is paranoid about conspirators and obsessed with heresy. Across the country, laws against Catholicism and witchery are fanatically enforced.
On Good Friday, deep in the woods of Pendle Hill, a gathering of thirteen is interrupted by the local magistrate. Two of their coven have already been imprisoned for witchcraft and are awaiting trial, but those who remain are vouched for by the wealthy and respected Alice Nutter. Shrouded in mystery and gifted with eternally youthful beauty, Alice is established in Lancashire society and insulated by her fortune. As those accused of witchcraft retreat into darkness, Alice stands alone as a realm-crosser, a conjurer of powers that will either destroy her or set her free.

“re-read for uni… winterson provides a narrative that gives characters a life story where they historically have been denied one. that aside,, the imagery and descriptions of what the characters endure is so violent it does not make for a particularly enjoyable read. at the minimum though, winterson forces the reader to witness such despicable violence in order to face the uncomfortable history that underpins the story, and forces readers to think.”
“Jeanette’s done it again, who’s shocked? Not me babe, I knew I’d be amazed when I started this but I didn’t expect it to pack THAT much of a punch. I love how bare-boned but deeply hard-hitting her writing is, and the no sugarcoat approach to all the violence and abuse and inhumanity of witch trials and the lives of the victims was so uncomfortably real - incredible. Also, I just love that she went ‘yeah they’re gonna be witches but also sapphic witches cause what the hell Protestant England.’”
“my 17th winterson 😎 cool concept but some of her weakest writing in my opinion :(”
