The Day of the Duchess

By Sarah MacLean
The Day of the Duchess by Sarah MacLean digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The third book in Sarah MacLean's witty and romantic Scandal & Scoundrel series featuring a ravishing heroine and the man, desperately in love, who now has to make amends.

The one woman he will never forget…

Malcolm Bevingstoke, Duke of Haven, has lived the last three years in self-imposed solitude, paying the price for a mistake he can never reverse and a love he lost forever. The dukedom does not wait, however, and Haven requires an heir, which means he must find himself a wife by summer’s end. There is only one problem—he already has one.

The one man she will never forgive…

After years in exile, Seraphina, Duchess of Haven, returns to London with a single goal—to reclaim the life she left and find happiness, unencumbered by the man who broke her heart. Haven offers her a deal; Sera can have her freedom, just as soon as she finds her replacement…which requires her to spend the summer in close quarters with the husband she does not want, but somehow cannot resist.

A love that neither can deny…

The duke has a single summer to woo his wife and convince her that, despite their broken past, he can give her forever, making every day the Day of the Duchess.

“I'm not crying, you are... Devastating love, but loved every moment.”
“Libby/audio This was difficult for me to enjoy. The mystery of what happened between Sera and Mal has been left unanswered since book one of this series. So this book finally tells their story. And it's a rather unpleasant one. Excuse the sacrilege, but this book feels like what i imagine Wuthering Heights to be. I have never read it, and have no desire to, but the impression i have of it matches a lot of what i felt while reading this book. Two people who love each other, but false impressions, miscommunication, crippling pride, hurt and sorrow come between them for many years. Trust is broken, hearts are broken. It's a discordant, difficult story to read. What it truly boils down to is a man who felt trapped, and a woman who equally was. What makes this worse was that the true schemers who were responsible are ignored in their part. I did enjoy the end, which made up a lot for everything else. In saying that, these aren't the type of characters, conflict or love story that i truly understand, it doesn't speak to my soul. These two are rather impetuous and fiery. They don't communicate, they don't forgive. They would rather run(heroine) or play games(hero) than have an honest conversation and perhaps be made a fool in love. There is very little compromise on Mal's side. I understand his mother was horrible. He was against the scheme of being trapped for his title. But why? What all has he done with his life that was so very aspirational instead? Do his friends love him? Well, from what i can tell, he has (possibly?) one friend. We don't see him at all in this book, so i hesitate to even count him. He builds a strange folly under his lake, on the chance his wife was found. My point here, is that aside from his pride, his love for his wife, and a smelly wig, he doesn't have much to his personality. He supposedly falls in love with Sera after a 10 min conversation, directly after declaring his disdain for marriage. We don't get to know much of anything about him, or more importantly, what makes his such a swoony hero. All we see is strife, and hurt and injury. I have a very difficult time liking or rooting for these two. We don't get to see why these two are soulmates, why they love and respect and adore each other, aside from very surface level things. In short, these two are fairly toxic. Do they heal from that, and change? Eh, i guess. I mean grand gestures are made. I just don't understand the appeal of this type of 'love' story, or these characters. That is fine-not made for me i guess. I did enjoy the ruse in the middle, when the sisters and the 'suit-tresses' are at the estate. Getting some time around them added some much needed humanity and levity to this dreary story. Felicity's name sounded familiar, so i may have already read her book. As for Ces, and the American, well, i like him just fine, but Ces Im much less interested in. Im unsure if i will bother reading on in the series, but they may surprise me.”
