The Damage We Do

By David Rose
The Damage We Do by David Rose digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Bumped from their intended destination, a young family finds themselves at a rather curious wellness spa with elderly, idiosyncratic hosts who eye the children with a little too much interest.

Mila doesn't want to be there. Not with the husband all her friends think is sensitive and sweet, not with her young son, who favors his father over her, and not with her infant daughter, who cries anytime Mila so much as picks her up.

Oppressed by the dark side of Europe's heart and the world's expectations of her as a woman and mother, Mila's memories and trauma begin to warp everything—including her reality.

The Damage We Do Reviews

3.5
“A short, brutal read that cuts deeper than its page count suggests. Don’t let the length fool you. This story leaves readers with so much to discuss and unpack Laced with gore, depravity, and psychological horror, this novella explores the lingering effects of childhood trauma, abusive relationships, and shows the often-undiscussed realities of postpartum depression. The postpartum element in particular hit me the hardest, with its disturbing honesty, hopelessness, rage, frustration, and disconnection. We watch as a mother slowly unravels and witness what happens as she reaches her breaking point in a fever like dream. We discover the dynamics of PPD and how quickly one can go from loathing and hatred to vengeance. Despite the gore, this story took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride. There were times I wanted to laugh (probably when it was inappropriate to), times I wanted to punch someone, and times I wanted to cry. Please check your trigger warnings as this book contains subject matter that can be triggering. This is one story that I will not forget anytime soon!”
