The Crook Factory
ByPublisher Description
It's the summer of 1942, and FBI agent Joe Lucas has come to Cuba at the behest of the Director to keep an eye on Ernest Hemingway in the Caribbean. Lucas thinks of it as a demotion-a babysitting job for a famous writer who has decided to play spy, assembling a team of misfits including an American millionaire, a twelve-year-old Cuban orphan, a Spanish jai alai champion and more in a would-be espionage ring Hemingway dubs the "Crook Factory."
But when Hemingway uncovers a critical piece of intelligence that both threatens his life and endangers the political landscape, the fate of the free world and the life of one of its most preeminent writers lies in the hands of the FBI's most ruthless agent.

“I feel like I learned something about United States history from this book. It solidified my dislike of J Edgar Hoover because he was a messy, conniving bitch. It’s a little convoluted since there are so many agencies you have to keep track of and overall, it was just a little longer than necessary.”
“I fell in love with Simmon's writing while reading https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3974.The_Terror . My appreciation for the search for the NW Passage & love of horror melded this book perfectly.
I will say I was skeptical coming into this book. I am not a huge espionage reader nor a fan of Hemingway BUT, anything centered around the "true" facts of this story are really informative! I do appreciate Simmon's transparency on what was true and false and it's inspired me to read more on the FBI, Hoover and some of the mistakes that were made during the war and during the Red Scare in the 50's.”
