The Court of Broken Knives
By Anna Smith SparkPublisher Description
Perfect for fans of Mark Lawrence and R Scott Bakker, The Court of Broken Knives is the explosive debut by one of grimdark fantasy's most exciting new voices.
It is the richest empire the world has ever known, and it is also doomed -- but only one man can see it.
Haunted by prophetic dreams, Orhan has hired a company of soldiers to cross the desert to reach the capital city. Once they enter the palace, they have one mission: kill the emperor, then all those who remain. Only from the ashes can a new empire be built.
The company is a group of good, ordinary soldiers for whom this is a mission like any other. But the strange boy Marith who walks among them is no ordinary soldier. Though he is young, ambitious, and impossibly charming, something dark hides in Marith's past -- and in his blood.
Dive into this new fantasy series for readers looking for epic battle scenes, gritty heroes, and blood-soaked revenge.

“Been holding this one for a good amount of time. Finally got to read it. Definitely mixed emotions on it. Writing style is different, but to my liking though it may not be for others. Hardest part is that there are parts that feel "dark and brutal" just to be dark and brutal. Over the top in many ways. Cutting out a woman's eyes and hands because she knocked over a candle felt like one too many details meant to show how brutal the world is when you've already done that for 200 pages. Characters are hard to root for as they are all pretty much bastard in some way or another. Feels early too similar to a prequel Darth/Anakin story line as the main character heads toward being so evil by the end of the series there is no what he will live. Which sadly makes me wonder if i should bother going on for the next two books. Might give it a second book to see if it speeds toward that bad ending or shows signs of turning around.”
