The Count Of Monte Cristo

By Alexandre Dumas
The Count Of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

After he is thrown in prison on his wedding day for a crime he did not commit, Edmond Dantès learns that he was betrayed by his friends and becomes determined to get revenge. His ally, Abbé Faria, helps him escape and Dantès travels to the Isle of Monte Cristo to uncover the man’s treasure. Assuming the identity of the Count of Monte Cristo, Dantès returns home and establishes relationships with those he knew in his past life, keeping their betrayal and his thirst for revenge, fresh in his mind.

The Count of Monte Cristo was inspired by Dumas’ father’s story of military service, betrayal, and family life as a man of mixed ethnicities. The Count of Monte Cristo has been adapted into several movies, television shows, plays, and literary adaptations, including sequels. It has also influenced many contemporary works such as V for Vendetta, Doctor Who, Star Trek, and The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

The Count Of Monte Cristo Reviews

“Such a book!!! I have a mix of feelings about it, but it's an intense book and a must read classic. I think most important thing is that we're still humans, after all.”
“Alexandre Dumas was a genius for his time and let me tell you why. First of all, throughout the first half of this book, you are introduced to all sorts of characters, each of them having their own life stories. Later, the stories become interconnected. It doesn't matter if a character is from Italy, France or Spain. Second of all and let this be my last point, you experience a full circle moment in the end. Each of the characters got what they deserved, even Danglars. I see each character as an emotion, either it be a sin or a virtue. As I see it, Caderousse represents weakness ; he is fundamentally a coward in all he does with his life and dies like one. Danglars is greed ; you can see it even in his dialogue with his daughter how money hungry he is and cold hearted. His forgiveness can be interpreted as an act of mercy from God ; God can forgive even the worst of us if we repent. Morcerf shows you how jealousy can eat you soul alive ; if I'm honest, I see him as both jealousy and betrayal because of his deeds since Dantès was imprisoned. He chose the easy way out, once again not thinking of anybody but himself. Villefort was a selfish man; as selfish as one can be. Mercédès is naivety; she fully trusts in the world. One of my favourite characters is Haydée, which for me represents hope ; hope to love again, hope to live again, hope to be happy again. And last, but not least, Edmond Dantès. The embodiment of God in human form. He is wrath, he is grace, he is goodness, he is love and vengeance himself. He is forgiveness. Oh, how much good can be in a man to do what he had done for Valentine and Maximilien. And how spectacular the ending was. Raised from the dead, now among the living. P.S. : " Wait and hope."”
