The Cost of Discipleship

By Dietrich Bonhoeffer & Eric Metaxas
The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer & Eric Metaxas digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

NEW FOREWORD BY ERIC METAXAS

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the most important theologians of the twentieth century, illuminates the relationship between ourselves and the teachings of Jesus in this classic book on living as a Christian.

What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the government worker? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace." "Cheap grace," Bonhoeffer wrote, "is the grace we bestow on ourselves...grace without discipleship....Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the girl which must be asked for, the door at which a man must know....It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life."

The Cost of Discipleship is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty.

“Very good! Each sentence is full of meaning with no fluff or filler whatsoever. This makes it a bit tougher to work through but all the more thought-provoking when you do. Some notable quotes: "No sacrifice which a lover would make for his beloved is too great for us to make for our enemy." "Earthly goods are given to be used, not to be collected." "Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively doing God's will." I could go on and on ______ Re: my disappointment in not having a Metaxas-free version on goodreads “The world exercises dominion by force and Christ and Christians conquer by service.” (Bonhoeffer) After having been to Bonhoeffer's House in Berlin, spending time at his silence and meditation garden in Szczecin, and visiting the camp where he was killed in Flossenbürg, it baffles me that someone who spent his life fighting a religious State and wrestling with the concept of a "religionless Christianity" could be so misused by the religious right in America today. "Descendants of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and a number of Bonhoeffer scholars have signed letters denouncing Eric Metaxas and other Christian nationalists they say are twisting the German theologian’s writing to serve their cause."
