The Conquest of Happiness

By Bertrand Russell & Mint Editions
The Conquest of Happiness by Bertrand Russell & Mint Editions digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Why am I so unhappy? That question, which has paradoxically plagued modern society more and more as the standard of living increases, is at the heart of Bertrand Russell’s practical and philosophical guide, The Conquest of Happiness (1930).

The book is divided into two parts. In the first, Russell breaks down what he sees as the various causes of unhappiness. The focus of the text is on philosophical concepts like envy, boredom, competition, and fear, rather than material causes of unhappiness. Russell then moves into part two, where he offers practical strategies for attaining happiness which include acute self-awareness, strong self-discipline, and healthy relationships with friends, family, and the community. By focusing on philosophical and time-tested means of realizing and maintaining happiness and satisfaction, Russell has created a guide that is as useful to readers in the modern day as it was to those in 1930.

About Bertrand Russell

Bertrand Arthur William Russel (1872 – 1970) was a major British public intellectual, mathematician, philosopher, and logician. Russell’s early life was characterized by the loss of much of his direct family, leaving him with a melancholic disposition. He claims that he was only saved from this encroaching darkness by his scientific pursuits. He attended university at Trinity College and distinguished himself in mathematics and philosophy. His academic career proved to be far reaching in scope, with projects ranging from theories on mathematics and etymology to treatises on propaganda and morality. During WWI, he was a self-proclaimed pacifist, a stance which saw his scandalous expulsion from Trinity College. As time passed, he continued to advocate against war and only changed his view when the seemingly far-flung notion of Nazi Germany claiming all of Europe was starting to become a reality. Today, he is remembered as a staunch advocate for the freedom of expression and as a towering intellectual figure of his time.
