Publisher Description

A landmark collection that brings together Truman Capote’s life’s work in the form he called his “great love,” The Complete Stories confirms Capote’s status as a master of the short story.

“To best experience Capote the stylist, one must go back to his short fiction. . . . One experiences as strongly as ever his gift for concrete abstraction and his spectacular observancy.” —The New Yorker

Ranging from the gothic South to the chic East Coast, from rural children to aging urban sophisticates, all the unforgettable places and people of Capote’s oeuvre are here, in stories as elegant as they are heartfelt, as haunting as they are compassionate. Reading them reminds us of the miraculous gifts of a beloved American original.

“The further and further I progressed through the stories, the more and more I enjoyed myself. Capote was a master story crafter. I especially enjoyed Miriam, Master Misery, House of Flowers and all of the stories involving Buddy and Sook. He is quickly able to develop these characters into people you care about or want to know more about... and the reappearance of characters/details/themes in various stories (actually written over many years) brings a cohesiveness to the collection.”
