“I know I’ll be coming back to these poems throughout the year (and the rest of my life) as I work to annotate and analyze them, read her other works, and dive deep into the analysis of others who have been inspired by her life and legacy. So while I may have “finished” reading this collection, I am just beginning to unravel them. One of my favorite aspects of Angelou’s style is her musicality. I was first introduced to her work through choir arrangements so I’m not surprised that the music jumps off the page throughout her collections. I always try to read poetry collections slowly but I felt ravenous to read poem after poem in this collection. Her ability to convey such complicated, nuanced, and difficult topics in a few stanzas is so impressive.”

About Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou was raised in Stamps, Arkansas. In addition to her bestselling autobiographies, including I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and The Heart of a Woman, she wrote numerous volumes of poetry, among them Phenomenal Woman, And Still I Rise, On the Pulse of Morning, and Mother. Maya Angelou died in 2014.
