Publisher Description

Elaine is thrown in the deep end and her life unravels before her eyes when the princess she serves dies in a tragic accident. All of a sudden, Elaine doesn't have a purpose. Alone and drifting, she realises the princess' death may not have been an accident at all, and things spiral even further into chaos.
Can Elaine find herself in the midst of it all, or will she let the stream tug her into het another life not of her choosing? And what of Raymond Dart, the king's chief investigator with a reputation for being the hardest, most intimidating man in the kingdom? Is the kindness he shows Elain real or is he acting to get her to confess to a crime she did not commit? Elaine doesn't know what to believe and her life could be on the line if she misses a step.

The Companion's Tale is one of The Wordmage's Tales, accompanying The Apprentice Storyteller. The apprentice has learned from master storyteller, Viola Alerion, and now he performs these classic tales from the Haldrian Empire in his own right.

“What's better than a fantasy story? A fantasy story with a murder mystery! Astrid V.J. does it again with her lyrical writing, interesting storyline and a unique way of delivering them. I enjoyed this short story so much as I have done her other stories. It was a fast paced and quick read. The characters were well written, and I liked the way their thought process and feelings were explored. The best part of the story was the message about finding oneself. It was the one thing I could relate to deeply due to my struggle with trying to understand who I am and what I want from life. The only reason I deducted a star was because of the ending. I wish things had turned out a bit differently for the characters. Overall, this was a great story and readers who enjoy futuristic fantasy settings should give it a try. Also, if you're looking for a quick and engaging read, this would be a great book as it won't take much of your time.”
“Loved this story. I liked how the story began with the storyteller and felt intrigued to know more about his past. The story itself I loved. I liked the will they won't they and how they seemed drawn to each other. I would have liked more on the investigation and wanted the story to be longer. To see them explore their lives and hopefully cross paths again.”
“Absolutely loved this short story of The Companion. The Companion's Tale is a story of a girl who is to accompany the Princess of the kingdom in whatever she does. To taste the food to check for poison, or to encourage the princess in the games and sports and everything in between. One would think that there would be bad blood having to always come second to the Princess, but rather, the Companion and the Princess become close as sisters. Everything changes when the Princess suddenly dies on the day that she was to be presented to the Prince, who she would marry, before the procession even began. The Princess dies right in front of the Companion, who was following the Princess and her mare. The shocked and devastated Companion now has no future to look forward to whatsoever. What will happen to her? Will she be thrown out of the Castle, now that the Princess is dead? Definitely read it to find out!! And the cherry on the, the book is absolutely free on Kindle. Check it out!”
“Another charming short story from the Word Mage collection, as always giving you pause for thought.”
