The Communist Manifesto

Publisher Description
"A spectre is haunting Europe—the spectre of Communism." The Communist Manifesto (1848) is one of the most important pieces of political writing in modern history, sparking outrage, revolution, and controversy since its initial publication in 1848.
In the text, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels begin by laying out the different classes of people within society and how those classes interact with one another. They stress the exploitation of the working class by the capitalist class and the consequences of that exploitation. The Manifesto concludes with a call to direct action, urging the masses of workers to rise up in revolution and seize the means of production. In their view, this revolution is the only path forward to create a just society.

About Karl Marx
Karl Marx (1818-1883) was a German philosopher, political theorist, economist, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. Best known for his 1848 pamphlet The Communist Manifesto and 1867 critique Das Kapital, Marx’s ideas surrounding social organization and economic distribution (known today as Marxism) still hold substantial influence over global political thought.

Friedrich
Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) was a German philosopher, political theorist, journalist, and revolutionary socialist born to a wealthy textile manufacturer in the Kingdom of Prussia. Despite this privileged background, Engels became a constant critic of capitalism. In 1844, he began what would become a lifetime of collaboration with Karl Marx, even editing the final volumes of Das Kapital after Marx’s death in 1883.
