The Children Of Húrin

By J. R. R. Tolkien
The Children Of Húrin by J. R. R. Tolkien digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Painstakingly restored from Tolkien’s manuscripts and presented for the first time as a fully continuous and standalone story, this paperback of the epic fantasy tale of The Children of Húrin will reunite fans of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings with Elves, dragons, Dwarves and Orcs, and the rich landscape and characters unique to Tolkien.

It is a legendary time in the First Age of Middle-earth, long before The Lord of the Rings, and Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwells in the vast fortress of Angband in the North; and within the shadow of the fear of Angband, and the war waged by Morgoth against the Elves, the fates of Túrin and his sister Niënor will be tragically entwined.

Their brief and passionate lives are dominated by the elemental hatred that Morgoth bears them as the children of Húrin, the man who dared to defy him to his face. Against them Morgoth sends his most formidable servant, Glaurung, a powerful spirit in the form of a huge wingless dragon of fire, in an attempt to fulfil this dark family curse, and destroy the children of Húrin.

Begun by J.R.R. Tolkien at the end of the First World War, this tale of heroic fantasy, The Children of Húrin, became the dominant story in his later work on Middle-earth. But he could not bring it to a final and finished form. In this book Christopher Tolkien has constructed, after long study of the manuscripts, a coherent narrative without any editorial invention.

The Children Of Húrin Reviews

4.0
“The Children of Hurin is one of the most heartbreaking tragedies I have ever encountered. Tolkien’s most complete tale of middle earth outside of the Lord of the Rings. The narrative and despair is gripping and the fate of Turin son of Hurin is dreadful. Oh what hope is there for him but death.”
“Epic, tragic, and beautifully written, Children of Hurín is another fantastic tale set in ancient Middle Earth. I didn’t know much about what to expect going into this, and I was shocked by the depth of emotion evoked in such a short novel pieced together by Christopher Tolkien. With epic battles, brotherly kinship, soul-crushing moments of loss, and seemingly inescapable despair, Children of Hurín truly has it all. Turín is a perfectly written anti-Aragorn: the two are so similar at the surface level, yet their paths diverge as Turín’s life grows dark under the curse of Morgoth. Absolutely a must-read for any fan of Lord of the Rings.”
“Meh. Out of all of the tales from the Silmarillion, this was my least favourite, but reading this book added more depth to Turin. I used to think he was just stubborn and arrogant, but in this ‘unfinished / finished’ tale, you can connect more with the cruelty of Morgoth’s curse on the Children of Hurin. He’s way more likeable here. And Beleg is still the best. Still not sure about the unintentional incest, though.”
