The Castle of Otranto is a book by Horace Walpole first published in 1764 and generally regarded as the first gothic novel. In the second edition, Walpole applied the word 'Gothic' to the novel in the subtitle – "A Gothic Story". The novel merged medievalism and terror in a style that has endured ever since. The aesthetic of the book has shaped modern-day gothic books, films, art, music and the goth subculture.
The novel initiated a literary genre which would become extremely popular in the later 18th and early 19th century, with authors such as Clara Reeve, Ann Radcliffe, William Thomas Beckford, Matthew Lewis, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson and George du Maurier.

“It’s been hit and miss with the classics for me. The Castle of Otronto is simply ok. Nothing more, nothing less. It shows great promise in the first few pages, as it wastes no time to setup a great theme—A promising villain, an unfulfilled prophecy, supernatural events happening, family lineages on the line… but over the course of the tale, the story simply gets boring—the way dialogue is written by Horace Walpole, it becomes infuriating at times where you have to re-read more than once to figure out who’s actually talking. As the story progresses it reads more like a play than an actual full-fledged story. Considering the potential of having this gothic castle as the center piece of the story, I was left wishing and wanting more from this story.”
