Publisher Description

Continuing the spellbinding saga of Practical Magic, master storyteller Alice Hoffman returns with the stunning second book in the Practical Magic series, brimming with lyric beauty and vivid characters.

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE!

For over three-hundred years a curse has kept the Owens family from love—but all of that is about to change. The novel begins in a library, the best place for a story to be conjured, when beloved aunt Jet Owens hears the deathwatch beetle and knows she has only seven days to live. Jet is not the only one in danger—the curse is already at work.

A frantic attempt to save a young man’s life spurs three generations of the Owens women, and one long-lost brother, to use their unusual gifts to break the curse as they travel from Paris to London to the English countryside where their ancestor Maria Owens first practiced the Unnamed Art. The younger generation discovers secrets that have been hidden from them in matters of both magic and love by Sally, their fiercely protective mother. As Kylie Owens uncovers the truth about who she is and what her own dark powers are, her aunt Franny comes to understand that she is ready to sacrifice everything for her family, and Sally Owens realizes that she is willing to give up everything for love.

A heartfelt and satisfying conclusion to a beloved series, The Book of Magic celebrates mothers and daughters, sisters and brothers, and anyone who has ever been in love.

“"Some stories begin at the beginning and others at the end, but all the best stories begin in a library." This was a worthy final chapter to the story of the Owens women, from the time Maria Owens' story began in England in the seventeenth century, all the way down to the newest member of the clan, baby Birdie Owens. It's written in the spirit of the three preceding novels, and magic and love is at the base of the story. There is some death in this Book Of Magic, and I think some people might not be happy to discover who is no longer living at the beginning of the story. Still, I feel like the death of Gary Hallet, Sally's second husband, though devastating, is realistic. People die unexpectedly all the time, and unlike lightning, loss sometimes strikes twice. I'm happy Sally got a third chance at true love. My heart also goes out to Alice Hoffman, because The Book Of Magic is not just an ode to love and magic, but to the magic of literature and libraries. It's also a reminder for me to visit my local library more. Also, does anyone have a recipe for Chocolate Tipsy Cake?”
“A really lovely and fitting end to the series. After the disappointment of Practical Magic I wasn't expecting much but it was far better. I even enjoyed the new character introductions as well. The softening of Sally from the last book was needed and well done. Even though Kylie was the one who propelled the story along she wasn't really the focus which I did feel was a bit of a disservice. Not my favourite in the series (that is magic lessons) but really enjoyable.”
