The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A debut novel full of magic, adventure, and romance, The Book of Doors opens up a thrilling world of contemporary fantasy for readers of The Midnight LibraryThe Invisible Life of Addie LarueThe Night Circus, and any modern story that mixes the wonder of the unknown with just a tinge of darkness.

Cassie Andrews works in a New York City bookshop, shelving books, making coffee for customers, and living an unassuming, ordinary life. Until the day one of her favorite customers—a lonely yet charming old man—dies right in front of her. Cassie is devastated. She always loved his stories, and now she has nothing to remember him by. Nothing but the last book he was reading.

But this is no ordinary book…

It is the Book of Doors.

Inscribed with enigmatic words and mysterious drawings, it promises Cassie that any door is every door. You just need to know how to open them.

Then she’s approached by a gaunt stranger in a rumpled black suit with a Scottish brogue who calls himself Drummond Fox. He’s a librarian who keeps watch over a unique set of rare volumes. The tome now in Cassie’s possession is not the only book with great power, but it is the one most coveted by those who collect them.

Now Cassie is being hunted by those few who know of the Special Books. With only her roommate Izzy to confide in, she has to decide if she will help the mysterious and haunted Drummond protect the Book of Doors—and the other books in his secret library’s care—from those who will do evil. Because only Drummond knows where the unique library is and only Cassie’s book can get them there.

But there are those willing to kill to obtain those secrets. And a dark force—in the form of a shadowy, sadistic woman—is at the very top of that list.

“This book was refreshing, I loved it ! I always love a time-travel book and the “magic world” was well explained, though I would’ve liked to know more about how Cassie could’ve been the one to create the books for some reason ?”
“This books was a 5/5 for me. At first I really thought this story would just be a fun adventure with magical books. But I’m so glad I was wrong. This story really explores the depth of what it means to be human and to be alive and experience everything. We get a journey through grief, friendship, joy, loss, and yes, adventure. It was so beautiful to watch the pieces come together and makes sense in such a cool way. Every part of the book was intertwined from the very first chapter when Mr. Webber dies. I absolutely loved the fact that she is the one who gave him the book at the very end to give to herself, it just felt so right. And the fact that Cassie went back to her grandpa’s death bed to give him joy… that brought me to tears. Being alive is such a blessing and it’s so easy to forget that when we’re all just trying to survive each day and do our best. But there’s so many beautiful thing to witness and see and feel, no matter how small. This book really put me in my feels and it has me reminiscing about my own life. This has definitely been an amazing ready and I’m so happy I got to experience this story🥹”

Surprised Face with Open Mouth“This might genuinely be one of the best books I’ve ever read. I have so many thoughts swirling around because The Book of Doors completely swept me away from the very first page. It instantly became a new all-time favorite. The time elements, the magic, the friendships, the writing—every single layer pulled me in deeper. I haven’t devoured a book this quickly in years; I physically could not put it down. I already downloaded another one of his books, even though it’s not from the same universe—I just needed more of his writing immediately. And I’m truly hoping he eventually writes a sequel to this story, because I’m nowhere near ready to leave this world behind. • Cassie creating the books = absolutely phenomenal • Emotional and character growth = outstanding • Story = captivating • Plot = incredible • Storytelling = fantastic I know I’ll need more time to fully process everything, but I was completely obsessed. I loved every high and low, every twist and turn. Cassie was so relatable, and Drummond and Izzy were instantly lovable. Even the side characters felt rich, intentional, and unforgettable. Cassie’s relationship with her grandfather was one of the most heartwarming parts of the entire story. The love between them, the joy she brings him, and the closure she finally receives—it all felt so tender and meaningful. And I especially adored her relationship with Webber. He was such a steadying presence in her life—a quiet, unwavering secondary father figure who believed in her even when she struggled to believe in herself. The way he protected her, cared for her, and held space for the depth of their connection (even keeping the truth from past-Cassie so she could grow into who she needed to be) added so much emotional weight. I also loved how both Webber and Granada trusted her “crazy” story without hesitation. Their immediate belief in her—and their willingness to stand by her—made me love them both endlessly. The narrative felt satisfyingly full-circle. The complexity of the themes, the layered ideas, the way the story weaves flashbacks and shifting perspectives—it made me feel like I was living inside the book, constantly craving answers. Even the antagonists—The Woman and Hugo—were written with such nuance that I hated them while still feeling a surprising compassion. It’s a powerful reminder that every person has a story, and those stories shape us more deeply than we realize. Ultimately, this book amplifies and advocates the importance of human connection—how deeply we need it, how much it anchors us, and how far we’ll go to protect it as well as protecting books and the magical places and things they do for humans. Overall, it was a wonderful, unforgettable read, and I truly wish there were more stories in this universe already.”
