“It took me a while to get into this one. Not the fault of the book. I just picked the wrong time to decide to read it. As a result I managed to read two other books and just 50 pages of this one. So my recommendation is to read this when you have more time to devote to it. It certainly made a difference to me. I love a dystopian and the premise of this one was fantastic. It alternates between the past and the future. In the past Dave is a cab driver who is on a downward spiral of depression and poor mental health. In the future England is broken apart by flooding and the people of England live by the word of Dave. Their whole life revolves around a book Dave wrote in his darkest moment. The moments in the future I found quite difficult to read. The characters speak in mokni which is a form of London Cockney. The back of the book had a glossary of terms which I constantly had to check but this didn't hold everything. I had to think a lot to work out what some things were. It was an interesting idea though and I enjoyed working out what aspects of Dave's life was incorporated into the beliefs of these people. I felt so sorry for Dave though. His anger and frustration were all connected to his depression. The separation from his wife and child set him off but if it hadn't been that it would have been something else. He isn't the most likeable of characters but I still wanted him to get the help that he needed. A great book and it certainly ranks highly on my list of favourite dystopians.”
