The Bone Shard Daughter
ByPublisher Description
The Bone Shard Daughter is an unmissable debut from a major new voice in epic fantasy — a stunning tale of magic, mystery, and revolution in which the former heir to the emperor will fight to reclaim her power and her place on the throne.
"One of the best debut fantasy novels of the year." — BuzzFeed News
"An amazing start to a new trilogy." — Culturess
"It grabs you by the heart and the throat from the first pages and doesn't let go." — Sarah J. Maas
The emperor's reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire's many islands.
Lin is the emperor's daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic.
Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright - and save her people.

“Pros:
- I did enjoy the slow reveals! It gives you a little hint into different intertwined secrets. Gasped multiple times mhm mhm I was so close but the reveals were swapped from what I thought ahaha
- Mephi and Jovis friendship was great!
- a lot of mirroring which I always enjoy. Truly shows different perspectives at varying privileges. Illusion vs reality. Locus of control.
- the magic system with the bone shards was so cool and unique. One of my favorites to read about!
Cons;
- I didn’t really feel attached to any of the characters. I thought they were all neat, but not something I truly felt for
- the deaths weren’t anything I cried over or felt pain for as a result
- I did not care for Bayan lol oops.. was kinda cool in the middle but then became more of a plot character for Lin rather than anything meaningful
- the writing is not something I usually enjoy. It was ok, but definitely wanted something a little more complex! Thus, as much I liked the reveals, I almost DNFed at 30% because it was so slow and kinda boring at the beginning
- I needed Lin to stop saying how much his dad favored Bayan (even if it was for some level of foreshadowing). At a certain point, you gotta admit girl you were the favorite!!! Pleeasseeee”

“I wish the over all description of the book was more transparent about the numerous povs. I feel like this book would’ve been easier to follow if I read it rather than listened to it. The sub-povs and their plot lines contributing to the story were dull and didn’t retain my interest. I normally don’t care for books written in multiple persons povs (like switching between 1st and 3rd) so if that also bothers you then you won’t like this book either.
I was intrigued by Lin’s pov…however, it’s started to feel to much like AI robots finding out they’re not humans towards the end…and that’s something I’m also not interested in.”

About Andrea Stewart
Andrea Stewart is the daughter of immigrants, and was raised in a number of places across the United States. Her parents always emphasized science and education, so she spent her childhood immersed in Star Trek and odd-smelling library books.
When her (admittedly ambitious) dreams of becoming a dragon slayer didn't pan out, she instead turned to writing books. She now lives in sunny California, and in addition to writing, can be found herding cats, looking at birds, and falling down research rabbit holes.
