The Bone Key: The Necromantic Mysteries of Kyle Murchison Booth

By Sarah Monette
The Bone Key: The Necromantic Mysteries of Kyle Murchison Booth by Sarah Monette digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The dead and the monstrous will not leave Kyle Murchison Booth alone, for an unwilling foray into necromancy has made him sensitive to—and attractive to—the creatures who roam the darkness of his once-safe world. Ghosts, ghouls, incubi: all have one thing in common. They know Booth for one of their own. These ten stories draw Booth from the safety of his work as a museum archivist into the darkness both of the supernatural and of the human pysche, where he will find answers to mysteries unsolved for decades and learn truths about himself he would rather never have known . . .

“Finished it. Loved it. If you're a fan of the Whyborne and Griffin series by https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6519692.Jordan_L__Hawk I think you'll love this too. Booth is like if Whyborne never met Griffin but still found himself in the middle of magical mishaps and mysteries. The characters and themes are incredibly similar as well. I actually had to check the date of publication because I became convinced the two stories were fanfiction of one another. The Bone Key is a series of short stories following the same character, Kyle Murchison Booth, as he encounters ghosts, cursed objects, and other occult happenings. These things come to him both in his personal life and through his position at the local museum. I never enjoy short stories but I honestly couldn't put this down! The stories have a classic ghost story feel to them - perfect as they're inspired by https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2995925.M_R__James and https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/9494.H_P__Lovecraft - but without the dated feel that leaves me frustrated when reading classics (and without the racism, misogyny, and homophobia often present in those classics). The stories felt somewhat timeless, I had a hard time placing what period this was meant to be take place in, but by the end I saw it as part of the charm. I wish I could make all my Lovecraft loving friends read this. In the meantime I'll settle for purchasing a copy for myself ;)”
