The Bone Key: The Necromantic Mysteries of Kyle Murchison Booth by Sarah Monette digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The dead and the monstrous will not leave Kyle Murchison Booth alone, for an unwilling foray into necromancy has made him sensitive to—and attractive to—the creatures who roam the darkness of his once-safe world. Ghosts, ghouls, incubi: all have one thing in common. They know Booth for one of their own. These ten stories draw Booth from the safety of his work as a museum archivist into the darkness both of the supernatural and of the human pysche, where he will find answers to mysteries unsolved for decades and learn truths about himself he would rather never have known . . .

“Reading a solid collection of short stories from an author I haven't read before is always a joy. This one was really fun - well written, inventive and creepy. All follow the adventures of Kyle Murchison Booth, a young man who works in a museum. He's an expert in mysterious books and (naturally) gets involved in investigating supernatural goings on. There's a range of creepy things for him to go up against in a series of elegantly told tales that recall the classic style of Lovecraft. It was the quality of the writing that impressed me most about this collection, it has a beguiling richness that makes you want more.”
“Sarah Monette, aka Katherine Addison. I love her prose and her creativity, and the way she can tell huge chunks of story in comparatively few words. This is kind of a composed novel built episodically of unrelated or barely related incidents. Each can be read and enjoyed separately, but they cumulate into a really enjoyable dive into a deeply private personality. Most, if not all, of the stories have potential multiple layers, which you can ponder or ignore as you wish. The stories are pretty excellent either way. It's one of those books I've read multiple times, always afraid I'll start to get tired of it due to familiarity. But instead, I find that the stories I was more lukewarm about to begin with grow on me. And I really do adore the protagonist. He's tragic and humble and brave and responsible and very, very sweet, and he sees almost none of that himself. He's very real. 5 out of 5. Maybe 10 out of 5.”
“short stories are my fav summer reads. read a story, swim, repeat. these linked shorts have fun details when read in order, but i would have been just as happy jumping around. kyle murchison booth is an intelligent yet bumbling fellow who is respected for his manners, morals and intellect. a true problem solver. if i had to guess his big three they'd be aquarius / virgo / scorpio.”
