Publisher Description

Elizabeth II’s coronation is looming, but DI Edgar Stephens is busy investigating the death of a local fortune-teller. Meanwhile, his old pal, the magician Max Mephisto, is rehearsing for his television debut, a coronation day variety show. But upon hearing that their wartime commander, Colonel Cartwright, has been found dead in his flat, the two men join forces to find out what happened.
While Max is stuck in rehearsals, Edgar finds himself heading to New York, hot on the trail of a mesmerist he’s sure has valuable information for them—and his trusty sergeant, Emma, investigates some important leads at home. As the clock ticks down to coronation day, the team must scramble to keep Max’s small-screen debut from ending in a dangerously explosive finale.

Thumbs Up“This book is the third in the series, and continued on with the plot of a detective and policemen having to follow leads to find out who the murderer is. This is a good mystery set in the past, and I enjoy reading more about the character development and the growth of their relationships throughout the books.”
“Another great series by Elly Griffiths. Set in 1950s Brighton, DI Edgar Stephens and variety artist and magician Max Mephisto find themselves unraveling the murder of their former commander from the Second World War, Colonel Peter Cartwright. The case becomes even more complex when they discover a surprising link to the (accidental?) death of Madame Zabini, a fortune teller whose death brings her colourful gypsy family into the investigation. This is what I always appreciate about Griffiths’ books: the unexpected combinations of characters and situations. For example, Edgar’s trip to the United States provides a cultural shock, vividly depicting his struggle with unfamiliar customs and ways of life. Additionally, the historical backdrop of Queen Elizabeth II’s upcoming coronation and the arrival of television in households offers a fascinating glimpse into the 1950s, adding depth and richness to the setting.”
