Publisher Description

From Boston Globe/Horn Book Award–winning author Brandy Colbert comes the story of four generations of a Hollywood family—an unforgettable tale of ambition, fame, struggle, loss, and love in America.

The Blackwoods. Everyone knows their name.

Blossom Blackwood burst onto the silver screen in 1962, and in the decades that followed, she would become one of the most celebrated actors of our time—and the matriarch of the most famous Black family in Hollywood. To her great-granddaughters, Hollis and Ardith, she has always just been Bebe. And when she passes away, it changes everything.

Hollis Blackwood was never interested in fame. Still, she’s surrounded by it, whether at home with her family or at the prestigious Dupree Academy among Los Angeles’ elite. When private photos of Hollis are leaked in the wake of Blossom’s death, she is thrust into the spotlight she’s long avoided—and finds that trust may be a luxury even she can’t afford.

Ardith Blackwood has always lived in the public eye. A television star since childhood, she was perhaps closer with Blossom than anyone—especially after Ardith’s mother died in a drug overdose. Ever since, she has worked to be everything her family, her church, and the public want her to be. But as a family secret comes to light and the pressures from all sides begin to mount, she wonders what is left beneath the face she shows the world.

Weaving together the narratives of Hollis, Ardith, and Blossom, award-winning author Brandy Colbert tells an unforgettable story set in an America where everything is personal, and nothing is private.

For Hollis and Ardith, family legacy is everything. But what happens when that legacy is built on a lie?

The Blackwoods Reviews

3.5
“I really enjoyed this story. It vaguely reminded me of “The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” as it navigated old Hollywood and as it flipped back and forth between the present and different eras of the past— but with an emphasis on the Black experience. I wish we had gotten more about the Babineaux and Blackwood reunion because it seems like so much of the backstory focused on that but the present day kind of skimmed over it. Overall a decent book though!”
“Brandy Colbert’s The Blackwoods tells the story of a multigenerational Black family whose legacy in Hollywood stretches back decades. The novel opens with the passing of the family matriarch, Blossom Blackwood, and from there introduces two of her great-great granddaughters, Ardith and Hollis. At seventeen, Ardith has embraced the family’s Hollywood legacy and is already a recognizable young actress, while Hollis prefers to live outside of the spotlight. Through their stories and the family history that came before them, the novel explores the complicated weight of legacy, fame, and identity. One of the strongest elements of this book is the way it moves between timelines. Colbert skillfully shifts between the present day and Blossom’s journey through old Hollywood in the mid-1900s. Watching Blossom carve out a place for herself in an industry that was not built for women like her was both heartbreaking and inspiring. Her sacrifices echo across generations, shaping the lives and decisions of the family members who come after her. As someone who loves historical fiction, this blend of past and present worked beautifully. The transitions between time periods felt seamless and added depth to the narrative rather than interrupting it. Blossom’s story in particular stood out as a powerful reminder of the resilience required to pursue dreams in spaces where representation and opportunity were limited. The characters themselves were engaging and layered. Ardith, in particular, was easy to root for, and the dynamic between family members reflected both the pride and pressure that can come with inheriting a legacy. The Blackwood family is large, but the family tree included at the beginning of the book was incredibly helpful while navigating the different relationships and generations. Beyond the Hollywood setting, this novel highlights themes of resilience, family bonds, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of those who come before us. It also shines a light on a piece of Hollywood history that isn’t always centered in mainstream narratives.”
“Okay I love reading about Black Weath !! I love the name Blossom :). Umm I know Hollis really liked her guy best friend but if he let one of her nudes leak when she asked him to delete them I’d never forgive him like no .. Orlando acting like a bitch .. I’m glad the families came together and are able to work through the secrets left by Blossom.. it broke my heart at the end when she called Micheal to talk able Abe and he’s like umm no. She wanted him to meet see his son.. Anywho good storyline for this book .. I’ll give it 4/5 it was slow at first. My favorite character was Ardith 😭😭💔. She is the sweetest person.”
