“Georgette Heyer's first novel, written at 17, is still more masterful than thrillers written by experienced adults. The Black Moth includes highwaymen, a sacrificing older brother, a spoiled wife, a yearning lover (or two), a ride or die bff, card cheats, and one dastardly duke.
While we wait patiently for Mr. Richard Carstares to decide to confess (who to choose? his brother or his wife?), we get the delightful story of Lord John Carstares, aka Jack, aka Ferndale, aka Mr. Carr, who traipses through the countryside, sort of holding up people for profit, all the while keeping his servant turned valet busy with his colorful, dare I say say foppish, wardrobe. At any rate, that's what he does until struck down by a shoulder wound and love, in that order.
But the true hero of this story? Molly! She never lost faith in Jack and was determined to see love win. She was an absolute sweetheart, and she and her husband burned up the pages with their obvious passion for each other.
This was a delight and Heyer is an underrated, underhyped treasure.”
