“Harkness continues to amaze with her lush and atmospheric writing style, pulling readers into her intricate world of magic and history. This is the 5th book in the popular All Souls Series, one of my favorites to recommend. The novel continues the story of Diana, witch, her husband Matthew, vampire, and their half witch/vampire twins. Diana navigates a complex web of family secrets, hidden truths, and an enigmatic oracle in the form of a mysterious black bird.”

“I saw this on display at my local library and picked it up, not realizing that it was the fifth book in a series! It does a decent job at establishing the setting and characters, though I am sure I've missed the bulk of their relationships and development, but overall this felt like a "meh" of a novel. There are interesting moments, but to me it just came off as another vaguely magical historical fiction type book; I wasn't super attached to the characters since this was my first go with them, and the conflict of the novel felt like it circled and circled with no real stakes or resolution. From reading some reviews, it seems like fans of this series don't love this novel either, so maybe someday I'll go and read the first book to see if I have a bit of a better time... For now, though, I'll turn this back in to the library and move on to the next thing.”
