“There is a deep satisfaction attached with reading a detective go about his work in the golden age.
When I began, the mind of Philo Vance made me want to categorize him with Holmes but his emotional capacity went beyond and entered a Poirot. However, reading Vance, there is a certain kind of detachment, wholly superficial, that does not let him sit into either of those pockets, nor could this detective be called a cross between them. It is a detective I would thoroughly enjoy on the big screen.
The mystery was very satisfactory, hinging between twisted nursery rhymes and a murderer hanging about among the characters on page. It is one of those detective mysteries which you might not even solve with the pen and paper at hand, for we discover the answer along with the detective and not a moment before.
The story lost a single star due to some minor points that did not sit well with the story. Integrating the vast knowledge of detective Vance in various subjects with painful details on subject matter made me lose interest at times. The other thing was the presence of the author as a character, like an overseer of the case, without much participation as a character.
But none of these things take away from the page turner this mystery was. I was floundering guessing until the very end.”
