The Better Part of Darkness by Kelly Gay digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Atlanta: it's the promised city for the off-worlders, foreigners from the alternate dimensions of heaven-like Elysia and hell-like Charbydon—some bring good works and miracles, and some bring unimaginable evil...

Charlie Madigan is a divorced mother of one, and a kick-ass cop trained to take down the toughest human and off-world criminals. She's recently returned from the dead after a brutal attack, an unexplained revival that has left her plagued by ruthless nightmares and random outbursts of strength that make doing her job for Atlanta P.D.'s Integration Task Force even harder. Since the Revelation, the criminal element in Underground Atlanta has grown, leaving Charlie and her partner Hank to keep the chaos to a dull roar. But now an insidious new danger is descending on her city with terrifying speed, threatening innocent lives: a deadly, off-world narcotic known as ash. Charlie is determined to uncover the source of ash before it targets another victim—but can she protect those she loves from a force more powerful than heaven and hell combined?

The Better Part of Darkness Reviews

3.5
“WIB? Women In Black. Kick ass off-world cop Charlie Madigan and her sidekick siren Hank police Atlanta’s gritty underworld (literally) and keep its citizens from harm from humans and offworlders alike. Easy to read, fun heroine, likable buddy cop escapades, and nothing in the plot or world that is too overdone or confusing. As a resident of Atlanta I was hoping for more “Atlanta-isms” but there was enough name drops to make it familiar enough. Good sub plot of family connections, girl power and motherhood thrown in. Reccomended for urban fantasy fiends, or anyone who likes a sprinkle of magic with their buddy cop dramas.”
“The better part of urban fantasy. Perfect for fans of Mercy Thompson and Kate Daniels, but in my opinion, even better for its darkness, grit, and scale. It's hard to find good Urban Fantasy because most of it is really just Paranormal Romance, but Charlie Madigan doesn’t dwell on romance 🙅‍♀️. Right off the bat, the overall concept of this book is fascinating 😲: Scientists have discovered that what we used to think of as heaven and hell are actually alternate dimensions with their own societies. Atlanta has become the city where the inhabitants converge, and mystical beings living amongst us is commonplace 🧝👿👹. Very fast-paced but doesn't skimp on character development or world building. Charlie and her partner, Hank, are superbly fleshed out with their own individuality and interpersonal conflicts. The meticulous world building and aforementioned concept gives the story a unique and fresh backdrop. Adding to this is how the complexity of supernatural politics, due to the converging societies, is woven into the gritty, urban landscape, making it feel grounded yet mysterious. After Netflix's Bright showed the true potential of urban fantasy in film, I immediately said that studios should look into adapting Charlie Madigan 🎬.”
