The Best We Could Do
ByPublisher Description
The Best We Could Do, the debut graphic novel memoir by Thi Bui, is an intimate look at one family's journey from their war-torn home in Vietnam to their new lives in America. Exploring the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents the story of her family's daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves. At the heart of Bui's story is a universal struggle: While adjusting to life as a first-time mother, she ultimately discovers what it means to be a parent — the endless sacrifices, the unnoticed gestures, and the depths of unspoken love. Despite how impossible it seems to take on the simultaneous roles of both parent and child, Bui pushes through.
With haunting, poetic writing and breathtaking art, she examines the strength of family, the importance of identity, and the meaning of home. The Best We Could Do brings to life her journey of understanding and provides inspiration to all who search for a better future while longing for a simpler past.

“The book answered some questions I had about what life is like in a refugee camp. I liked that there were no clear villains or heroes. People did what they could because of their circumstances. It also shows that parents may not have the best tools, but they are trying their best with what they have.”
“incredibly moving”
“This book covered a lot of ground as a memoir. It weaved the pasts of an entire family through their individual lives, together with their shared refugee journey from Vietnam to America. “The Best We Could Do” shows how doing what it takes to survive can create ripples that become waves through the generations. It then shows how the path of understanding can lead to forgiveness, healing and personal freedom.
This book gave me a great insight into the Vietnam war (which I was regretfully oblivious to the details of)
and it told a story that was both foreign and yet in many ways, extremely relatable. Being written in a graphic novel format, it brought an extra layer of depth and historical (pictorial) context that would have been easily lost with words alone.
This was an excellent read and I’d easily recommend it.”
