The Best American Short Stories 2022 Reviews

3.0
““The Best American Short Stories 2022” edited by Andrew Sean Greer The “Best American” series is always a bit hit or miss for me: sometimes I adore a year’s anthology and other years it just feels “meh.” It all depends on the sensibilities of that year’s editor. I started my read of the 2022 selection feeling meh about the first 100 pages. I spent the remaining 200 adoring it, and even reconsidering how I felt about the first 100 when I looked back on them. Greer has collected a beautiful “best of” anthology here with a wide range of styles and narratives. And I love the range of authors, featuring both well-known veterans, such as Karen Russell and Lauren Groff, and authors I have never heard of but will be watching for again, such as Yohanca Delgado and Kenan Orhan.  There were, as always with these anthologies, a few duds for me but not to the degree there usually is. No story was unenjoyable; the worst it got was “this is mildly interesting” as opposed to “can’t stop reading.” I added sticky notes to at least 60% of this anthology, marking those that I want to return to for various reasons, but picking five favorites I have to give it to “A Little Widow from the Capital” by Yohanca Delgado, “Foster” by Bryan Washington, “Ghost Birds” by Karen Russell, “The Sins of Others” by Hector Tobar, and the thoughtful and inventive “The Beyoglu Municipality Waste Management Orchestra” by Kenan Orhan. To me it’s always hard to give a five star review to an anthology like this, because it is so many different styles and types of stories; no anthology can be a home run for every reader at all times. But realistically, this is a solid 4.5 stars, about as close to a full five as I could hope for with an edited anthology. Definitely the best of the “Best of” series that I’ve read in a long time.”
“Some of these I LOVED. So brilliant so good. Others just fell a little short for me. There wasn’t any I necessarily didn’t like, they just didn’t work for me. A Ravishing Sun: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Little Widow from the Capital ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Man of the House ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Wind ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Hollow ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Detective Dog ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Sugar Land⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Souvenir Museum ⭐️⭐️ Post ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bears Among the Living ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Soon the Light ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mbiu Dash ⭐️⭐️ The Meeting ⭐️⭐️ The Beyoğlu Municipality Waste Management ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Ghost Birds ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mr. Ashok’s Monument ⭐️ Ten Year Affair ⭐️⭐️ The Sins of Others ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Elephant Seals ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Foster ⭐️⭐️⭐️”
