“Although an interesting story of well-known individuals, this reader often questioned the point of view written. The author's view of Anne Morrow Lindberg's almost blind devotion to her husband, John, feels based mostly on her passivity. dependence, crumbs, and low self-concept, often infuriating this reader. Her own strength rarely depicted clearly. This sentiment is second only to the shocking romanticized depiction of Hitler's Germany at its start through the eyes of the characters, leaving this reader extremely uncomfortable. There is no gentle representation of Charles, often overbearing, somewhat emotionally abusive. His character moves through the pages stiffly, manipulatively, and often unkindly. The author successfully told a story of ego, duplicity, the inability to communicate authentically, devotion, celebrity's downside, loss, betrayal and denial. It did, however, fail at upholding the hero's reputation history has given us about the Lindberg's. Had the book been simply about a marriage instead of of having these names attached, it may have settled better. The story is likable; the characters, I found here, were frustratedly not. Their truth and clarity arrived almost too late.
