By Gabriel García Márquez & Gregory Rabassa
The Autumn of the Patriarch by Gabriel García Márquez & Gregory Rabassa digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

One of Gabriel García Márquez’s most intricate and ambitious works, The Autumn of the Patriarch is a brilliant tale of a Caribbean tyrant and the corruption of power.

From charity to deceit, benevolence to violence, fear of God to extreme cruelty, the dictator of The Autumn of the Patriarch embodies the best and the worst of human nature. Gabriel García Márquez, the renowned master of magical realism, vividly portrays the dying tyrant caught in the prison of his own dictatorship. Employing an innovative, dreamlike style, and overflowing with symbolic descriptions, the novel transports the listener to a world that is at once fanciful and real.

The Autumn of the Patriarch Reviews

“Hmmm... I consider myself lucky that this is the last book by this author that's featured on the 1001-list. And that I actually read it last. I'm not sure if I would have continued reading the other books I recently finished, had this been the one I picked up first. I am confused by what I read, gdmt (abbreviation from the word the general frequently uses. The whole thing didn't make sense, general, sir. I couldn't find a real thread in the story, apart from the illusion that he who gives the orders lives in. I even had a hard time figuring out if the story was chronological or not. I think it was, but (as far as I can tell) the book starts only when the MMC is already old. And thinking about it, wasn't his death/finding his body described early on? And who is the I? I detected more than one, but then lost count, lost track of the how and why. So, this little piece I wrote about this book is filled with questions. Sometimes that's okay, then it makes me mull on what I read and make up my own mind on what was written by the author. But in this case I won't do that, because I can't make heads or tails from what I just read.”
