Expressionless Face“Welp, this was a book, and personally, very mediocre. I had such a hard time reading this series, which was unfortunate cause I thought it would be better. I have some other books from Olivie Blake and I’m kinda scared to read them now cause of how this book went, especially the writing style. The writing was confusing and clunky at times. Like, it should not take a page and a half to describe something so simple. At times it felt like I was reading an academic paper, if I wanted to do that I would just do my university readings. I found the characters unlikable and just overall really annoying. Yes there was some character development but at this point I could not care. The ending was also a let down for me, I don’t know what I was expecting but it wasn’t that. Overall, a very lacklustre series with convoluted writing and unlikable characters.”
Thinking Face“I have so many complicated thoughts so come along for what's sure to be a chaotic rant. Okay overall this series was kinda boring to read (at least for me who loves my high fantasy and fae etc). It was a LOT of just people's inner dialogue and conversations so a lot of standing around doing nothing, even when there's magic involved, very little action. HOWEVER I will say this third book has noticeably more action than the previous two so that was a point in it's favour. I think it's important to recognise that these books, particularly the first but even by the third where there is a bit more plot and action, that they are at their core about the complicated relationships between these six people and how they change and grow which you can totally see in this book. These books were like deep commentary on the nature of humanity, what we do with power and how this would be even worse if some people had magic. It reflects on themes of capitalism, addiction, a variety of mental illnesses, trauma, grief, friendship, love (in many forms), revenge, and what it means to be "good" vs "bad". It was by no means a fun read, it's meant to make you think and reflect. But this third instalment totally had some unexpected plot twists and more action than the others so that wins points for me. As much as it was a slog at times to get through this trilogy and I likely will never read them again, I have a feeling it will stick with me and I'll remember the messages I pulled from this unique story.”
“found myself waiting for callum’s POV, absolutely the highlight of this last instalment!”
