Poor little Puffin - spends all day in the penguin house at the Zoo, constantly being referred to as a "sweet", "kooky" or "funny-looking" penguin. One day, he finally has had enough and goes on an epic Puffin rant until a little girl comes along and steals his thunder (and his heart!)
What a delightful book. I don't even know where to start praising it. The illustrations were the first thing that grabbed me - bright, colourful and amusing, they drew me in and made me smile. I can only imagine how young children would be delighted by the antics of our little puffin friend.
The story itself was very well told, too. We all have times when those around us frustrate us by not knowing exactly who we are or what makes us us - the Puffin is no different. And then when the little girl comes along and knows exactly what he is, then we see the joy and relief on Puffin's face so clearly.
The only thing that let me down was that I would liked to have seen a little more intereaction at the end between the Puffin and the little girl. Rather than have her give all the information about puffins in a few pages, it would have been nice to stretch it out a little bit and give some interaction to break up the long passage from the little girl.
Highly recommended for young readers and school libraries. This is a book that will enchant children across the globe.
