Publisher Description

The fifth book in the award-winning Accidental Alchemist Mystery Series by USA Today bestselling author Gigi Pandian.

A blackmailer obsessed with gold. A boyfriend who's more than he seems. And a treasure hidden on the Oregon coast.

Alchemist Zoe Faust's mentor Nicolas Flamel is back in her life, but catching up with him will have to wait. An elusive blackmailer has threatened to expose a dangerous alchemical secret. Zoe's boyfriend is out of town protecting secrets of his own. So when rumors of a treasure map reach Zoe, she turns her back on what sounds like no more than a game.

Zoe's mischievous living gargoyle best friend Dorian, who thinks of himself as a modern-day Poirot, is convinced the map is real—and that it's the key to proving himself as valuable to Zoe as her human family. With the help of the neighborhood teenagers, Dorian sets out to find the treasure, risking more than he planned in the process. Rumors, treasures, and secrets intersect to unearth more than Zoe could have dreamed—and could leave her family changed forever.

Can Zoe stop the threat to the family unit she's created?

The Alchemist of Fire and Fortune Reviews

4.0
“About: The Alchemist of Fire & Fortune is the 5th book in The Accidental Alchemist Mysteries series. In this book, the wife of the female alchemist's mentor is being blackmailed after someone recorded her pulling a large gold nugget from a painting in her art studio. She and the female alchemist work together to try to identify the blackmailer to stop them since the painter cannot produce more gold and cannot be revealed as an alchemist. At the house, the female alchemist's magical friend assumes that the alchemist has to choose between him and her mentor and his wife. The magical friend also discovers a treasure map in a portrait of a writer. He enlists the help of the three teenage friends to find the treasure. Thoughts: I thought this book had too much going on in completely different directions. The author should have just focused on the blackmailer, dropped the Zoe-has-to-choose-one-of-us act, and maybe still kept the two groups divided, but had them both looking for the same culprit instead of hunting different things. If Gigi Pandian really wanted to rewrite The Goonies that could have been book 5.5 and just been its own thing with the magical friend and the teenagers. I would have read that. I also did not like the blatant Scooby-Doo reference. It was not done well. There are also two characters in this book that I do not like. And those two characters being unlikable did not advance the plot or help with character development in any way. There was also a character who has been in this series since the beginning, whom I absolutely grew to hate in this book, when you are meant to love them. I have never liked the main character's love interest, but he was completely unbearable in this story. I did not like this book, with everything going on it took away from the story, and it didn't have the same feel as the previous books in the series. Lessons: Was there anything learned in this book? I am not sure. I didn't gain anything from this book.”
