Daryl Gregory's The Album of Dr. Moreau combines the science fiction premise of the famous novel by H. G. Wells with the panache of a classic murder mystery and the spectacle of a beloved boy band.

It’s 2001, and the WyldBoyZ are the world’s hottest boy band, and definitely the world’s only genetically engineered human-animal hybrid vocal group. When their producer, Dr. M, is found murdered in his hotel room, the “boyz” become the prime suspects. Was it Bobby the ocelot (“the cute one”), Matt the megabat (“the funny one”), Tim the Pangolin (“the shy one”), Devin the bonobo (“the romantic one”), or Tusk the elephant (“the smart one”)?

Las Vegas Detective Luce Delgado has only twenty-four hours to solve a case that goes all the way back to the secret science barge where the WyldBoyZ’ journey first began—a place they used to call home.

“Clever little story”
“This is perfect top to bottom, holy hell. I chuckled again and again, my eyebrows were playing twister on my forehead the whole time, and by the end I was flipping back to reread sections and click my tongue approvingly. Amazing, engrossing read. Single handedly making my want to write my own locked-room, science fiction, boy band centric story. Please don’t sue me, Daryl Gregory, you just made it look SO FUCKING COOL!”
“This was a super fun book to read, and I really needed something light and fun right now LOL. It can be hard to find a novella that can bring in good character backstory/trauma, worldbuilding, suspense and a satisfying ending in such a short number of pages, but this one does it well. I never read The Island of Dr. Moreau, so I dont know how much of it this book takes in, but I dont think I missed out not knowing. The story pokes fun at numerous genres and the banter between characters is awesome. The pop references the characters make, the bad puns and dad jokes, and the rants about perfect pop songs remind me of so many of my friends :) And this book contains probably my favorite anxiety-driven run-on sentence of all time. Who knew that would be a thing?”
“I never had a chance to read or watch a filmed adaptation of the story this pulls its inspiration from, but when I pulled this off a shelf at a local bookstore, I had to read it! I’m always down for a murder mystery but when you put a murder involving a boy band and they are animal/ human hybrids you just must get hooked by the craziness of it. This story has so many twists and turns, some I expected and some that caught be completely off guard. I feel this also gave a look into the world of music and how sometimes it can be hell for artists working with individuals that just want to use them. The only thing I do wish it was a little longer with more details about the band and their past. But overall, this mix of mystery and music is highly recommended.”
