The Afterlife of Holly Chase

By Cynthia Hand
The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Before I Fall meets “bah, humbug” in this contemporary YA reimagining of A Christmas Carol from New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand.

On Christmas Eve five years ago, seventeen-year-old Holly Chase was visited by three Ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she’d become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways. She didn’t. And then she died.

Now she’s stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge—as their latest Ghost of Christmas Past. So far, Holly’s afterlife has been miserable. But this year’s Scrooge is different. This year’s Scrooge might change everything…

The Afterlife of Holly Chase is a witty, poignant, and insightful novel about life, love, and seizing second (or third) chances, perfect for readers who loved Before I Fall or Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares.

Thumbs Up“What a fun and unique take on A Christmas Carol and holiday books in general! Writing: The writing was good. It’s in first person and has more of a YA feel, which isn’t my preferred style, but it was well-executed overall. Characters: I appreciated the characters in this book. There were quite a few of them, and I could tell most of them apart, but some of the male characters blurred together for me. The secondary characters who didn’t play large roles could have been more fleshed out. Even minor characters are important, and it would have been nice if they had a bit more personality. That said, the main character was solid, and many of the other characters stood out. Plot: The plot was definitely a highlight. The way the book started immediately grabbed my attention, and the ending wrapped everything up in a fantastic way. It was clever and unique, and I really appreciated that aspect of the story. Pacing: The pacing started off at a faster clip, but it really slowed down in the middle before picking back up a bit toward the end. The slower middle section dragged for me, and I ended up putting the book aside for nearly a month because I wasn’t that interested. I even debated not finishing it, but ultimately, I was intrigued enough to pick it back up and I’m glad I did. Overall: This is a fun book, but be prepared to get a little frustrated with the main character. While I enjoyed a lot of what I read, nothing really stood out to me beyond the plot. The writing and characters were fine but ultimately felt unmemorable. However, the plot’s uniqueness makes it worth the read and is the part I’ll remember most.”

About Cynthia Hand

The Lady Janies are made up of New York Times bestselling authors Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows. They first met in 2012, when their publishers sent them on a book tour together, and they hit it off so well they decided to write My Lady Jane so they could go on book tours together all the time. Between the three of them they’ve written more than twenty published novels, a bunch of novellas, a handful of short stories, and a couple of really bad poems. They’re friends. They’re writers. They’re fixing history by rewriting one sad story at a time. Learn more at ladyjanies.com.
