The Accidental Diva
By Tia WilliamsPublisher Description
From the New York Times bestselling author of the Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick Seven Days in June comes a hot and hilarious borough-crossed love story about a Manhattan beauty editor, a Brooklyn writer, and the attraction that takes them by storm.
Billie Burke is smart, endlessly driven, and fabulous—it’s no accident she landed a job as the beauty editor at the world’s leading fashion magazine. Caught in a whirlwind of long office hours and fashion industry party-hopping, she hasn’t had time to focus on her nonexistent love life. Instead, she’s been living vicariously through her friends.
Then she meets Jay Lane, a gorgeous up-and-coming Brooklyn writer who pretty much knocks her right out of her stilettos. Soon Billie finds herself doing things with Jay in broad daylight that she’s never even dared to think about in the privacy of her own head. In no time at all she’s absolutely addicted to an affair that’s as crazy and seductive as New York itself. But there’s a lot she doesn’t know about Jay, whose rough past seems determined to start creeping back into their present....

“I read this after 7 Days in June, and I definitely noticed the growth in maturity of the author when writing that book compared to this. I wonder if I would have liked this book better had I read it first or maybe a few years ago. The woman protagonist is a 20-something and very much thinks and behaves like a 20-something. She comes off as a "it's all about me and my needs and my world" type of woman. She's from a different background (read affluent) than her love interest who has made it out of projects due to his writing. She has difficulties understanding or acknowledging his world and his background. In fact, she's downright judgmental in some instances. It was an easy read and not terrible, but it definitely felt like a happy-for-now story and not happily ever after. They are just too different and she would never be able to fully accept or understand the challenges and compromises someone has to make to survive in a low income environment.”

“I loved Seven Days in June, so I was expecting to at least like this one, but I did keep in mind that this was published almost 20 years ago and is one of the authors earlier works. To say that this book was a severe let down would be an understatement, there was a very disturbing scene that depicts a clear lack of consent that I cannot get past, considering that the two main characters are the focus of that scene, and that Jay is still regarded as the hero in this romance during and after the scene takes place. Although I was expecting the writing to be not nearly as mature as Seven Days in June (it definitely is less polished, but that’s to be expected imo), I was not expecting that scene, which completely destroyed the entire reading experience for me.”

“Love Tia, but this did not age well. I will say that if I read this when it was published and I was in my 20's I would be obsessed. I regret not finding her writing until now, it would have been interesting to age and mature with her characters.”
