Thalia

By Larry McMurtry
Thalia by Larry McMurtry digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

One of Entertainment Weekly’s "Most Beautiful Books of the Year"

The renaissance of Larry McMurtry, “an alchemist who converts the basest materials to gold” (New York Times Book Review), continues with the publication of Thalia.

Larry McMurtry burst onto the American literary scene with a force that would forever redefine how we perceive the American West. His first three novels— Horseman, Pass By (1961),* Leaving Cheyenne (1963), and The Last Picture Show (1966)— all set in the north Texas town of Thalia after World War II, are collected here for the first time. In this trilogy, McMurtry writes tragically of men and women trying to carve out an existence on the plains, where the forces of modernity challenge small- town American life. From a cattleranch rivalry that confirms McMurtry’s “full- blooded Western genius” (Publishers Weekly) to a love triangle involving a cowboy, his rancher boss and wife, and finally to the hardscrabble citizens of an oil- patch town trying to keep their only movie house alive, McMurtry captures the stark realities of the West like no one else. With a new introduction, Thalia emerges as an American classic that celebrates one of our greatest literary masters.

*Just named in 2017 by Publishers Weekly the #1 Western novel worthy of rediscovery.

Thalia Reviews

“Thalia is a reprinting of McMurtry’s first three novels: Horseman Pass By, Leaving Cheyenne and The Last Picture Show. The first and third of the novels, written in the 60’s, are set in 1950”s rural West Texas. They are realistic, tough-minded looks at the lives of those who carved a life out of the unforgiving plains and small town life in that post-war period when America was moving from rural, small town to a more urban society. A critic called McMurtry’s writing a blend of pathos and humor. The characters in these novels are absorbing, complex and so interesting, even when they are fighting loneliness, boredom, and unexpected tragedy. Leaving Cheyenne is set in the first half of the twentieth century and centers on a love triangle dominated by the loving, but independent, Molly who insists on loving two men on her own standards of what it means to love someone. “But I don’t want to leave,” Jacey said plaintively, “Why can’t I just stay here and go to college in Wichita?” “Because life’s too damn hard here,” Lois said. “The land’s got too much power over you. Being rich here is a good way to go insane. Everything’s flat and empty and there’s nothing to do but spend money.” Romance might not last, but it was something while it did. She looked up the street and waved at Sam the Lion, but he was looking the other way and didn’t notice her and she went back into the empty cafe, wishing for a few minutes that she was young again and free and could go rattling off across Texas toward the Rio Grande. “There ain’t nothing snootier than an oilman who’s had to sell one of his Cadillacs.””
“I just simply cannot get enough Larry McMurtry, he takes regular people and their everyday lives and turns it into some of the best stories you’ve ever read!”
“—That's why I don't mind so bad being old. If I was young agin, I'd probably mess up even worse than I did. —That's a pessimistic damn thing to say. Why, I think life's a damn sight more fun than that. —You ain't lived one. HORSEMAN, PASS BY -- Early November, 2024 -- 3/5 Didn't know how I'd react to a Western novel, but I LEAVING CHEYENNE -- Early December, 2024 -- 5/5 Hello, Challengers! I almost skipped this one to make sure I would be able to get through The Last Picture Show, and then ended up devouring this in about four sittings. Absolutely entranced by it. McMurtry has an uncanny ability to fully capture the innocence of youth and the bitterness of age—these characters are so thoroughly alive it's almost scary. The narrative structure is perfect, it's quite bold and racy for its time and holds up really well. Completely adored this. THE LAST PICTURE SHOW -- Late Dec/Jan 2024/2025 -- 3/5 Not quite as impactful as I'd hoped—and quite a lot rougher in places than I'd imagined. They were barely at the picture show!!”
