Licenciada en Arqueología y maestra en Ciencias Antropológicas por la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia (enah); doctora en Egiptología por La Sorbona. Recibió el Premio Alfonso Caso a la mejor investigación en arqueología en 1994 y en 2013, el Premio Universidad Nacional en 2003 y es doctora honoris causa por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (unam). Ha participado en excavaciones en México, Bolivia, Egipto, Turquía e Israel. Ha publicado 27 libros y más de 190 artículos especializados y capítulos de libros. Ingresó a El Colegio Nacional el 9 de abril de 2007.
