Surprised Face with Open Mouth“Well, I have a lot of thoughts. First of all, about the story: it is what I wished for as a child, it is a shame that I only knew it now that this existed. It is a great adventure, surviving on a desert island fashion, where most of the happenings are building houses, exporing, cultivating plants, tending to animals etc. It was what I dreamt of as a child, really. What I did not like at all, was the VERY preachy tone of the whole book. But I guess it is a product of its time, so that is that. I felt like the ending was just no good at all, not suiting the whole thing. And turns out I was right! Turns out that the story's outlines with the shipwreck and the island adventures was written by Wyss at the very beginning of the 19th century. Then, his son added stuff and changed things. Then a random lady did that too. Then it was translates to English, and back then, translation was more like writing somathing loosely based on the original. So there are multiple books out there, with this title, that are sort of similar at the beginning and have very different versions as endings. I never knew this! And for some reason I find it fascinating. (For the record, I read the version where at the end savages appear, kidnap the mother and Francis and they meet the missionary and Emily and her daughters and Earnest goes to Europe and comes back with Henriette.) But with all honesty, I am also a bit disappointed, like I read it, and it feels like I haven't read it. Because if by any chance I will ever have a conversation about it with someone, maybe we haven't even read the same book. I don't know why it bugs me this much, because the chances that this will happen are minuscule to none 😅”
