“It's hard to rate this book... I was so confused and wanted to dnf this book when I was about 20% in, but then I thought I might miss something, so kept reading. At some point I almost enjoyed the book - when I stopped looking at this book as on magical realism/fantasy book. For me it's a coming-of-age story, dealing with loss, depression, trying to find your place in a world. From this perspective it was ok, but even then I'd rate it 1 - at the beginning, 2.5-3 in the middle, 1 - in the end.”

About Karen Russell
KAREN RUSSELL, a native of Miami, won the 2012 National Magazine Award for fiction, and her first novel, Swamplandia! (2011), was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. She is a graduate of the Columbia MFA program, a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow, and a 2012 Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin. She lives in Philadelphia.
