Publisher Description

Most of us are both horrified and fascinated by the dark psychology of serial killers and predators who dominate headlines and true crime documentaries.  But what if the psychopath wasn't on the news? What if they were your spouse, boss, child, parent, date? In Surviving a Psychopath, Kerrie Droban, veteran attorney, award-winning true crime author and expert consultant on criminal pathology, takes readers beyond the sensational cases and into the hidden world of relational psychopathy. Droban reveals how they charm their way into our lives --appearing disarmingly normal, until it's too late.

With chilling clarity and raw vulnerability, Droban exposes the red flags, psychological manipulation, and emotional terrorism inflicted by predators who live among us and cannibalize our lives. They're not insane. They're insanely evil, terrifying calculated, utterly remorseless and masters of disguise.

Surviving a Psychopath is a powerful resource for anyone who's questioned their reality, blamed themselves for another's cruelty, or wondered how to break free from the grip of a predator.  Through real-life insights from both sides of the justice system, Droban arms readers with the knowledge and courage to recognize the manipulation before it's too late--and reclaim their lives after devastation.

Surviving a Psychopath: In Court. In Life. In "Love." Reviews

“This book was fascinating and eye opening. I liked how it was laid out and really explained in plain English how to understand psychopathy and what to look for and how to understand what you are seeing. The author really took their time showing all parts not just the red flags but the mental anguish of the victims also. This isn't something that is easy to just get over, it is amazing how manipulative these types of people can be and how easy it is to fall for what is going on and not even see it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.”
“Thank you to Booksirens for this free ARC, all opinions are my own. I am so impressed by the research that went into this book; this is basically the manual on how to recognise, deal with and get out of a relationship with a psychopath. I was expecting more of a "true crime" type of writing, while this is more akin to extensive sociological research.”
“Overall, I really did enjoy this book. It delivers exactly what it promises, and for a non-fiction work dealing with such a dark and serious subject, it’s surprisingly accessible and easy to follow. I found Droban’s writing style engaging—it’s clear, straightforward, and avoids the dryness that can often weigh down books of this nature. That said, while it includes references to situations around the world, it’s fair to say the focus is heavily American. This becomes particularly noticeable when discussing legal processes, such as the support available in court, which can differ drastically from one country to another. One aspect that I feel really deserves to be shouted from the rooftops—especially in the sections on divorce, family law, and personal safety—is the issue of financial privilege. Much of the advice and many of the resources shared are incredibly useful—if you have the means to access them. The unfortunate reality is that some people can barely afford the basic costs of a divorce, let alone additional expenses for security systems, expert legal representation, or long-term protective measures. This needed more attention in the narrative. I also would have appreciated a broader representation of people from various backgrounds. Including more voices across different socio-economic groups, ethnicities, and cultures could have offered a more nuanced view of how these situations can play out differently depending on personal and cultural contexts. That said, I still found this to be a well-written, informative, and accessible book. Many thanks to the author, publishers, and BookSirens for the ARC.”
