Survive the Dome by Kosoko Jackson digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The Hate U Give meets Internment in this pulse-pounding thriller about an impenetrable dome around Baltimore that is keeping the residents in and information from going out during a city-wide protest.

Jamal Lawson just wanted to be a part of something. As an aspiring journalist, he packs up his camera and heads to Baltimore to document a rally protesting police brutality after another Black man is murdered.

But before it even really begins, the city implements a new safety protocol…the Dome. The Dome surrounds the city, forcing those within to subscribe to a total militarized shutdown. No one can get in, and no one can get out.

Alone in a strange place, Jamal doesn't know where to turn…until he meets hacker Marco, who knows more than he lets on, and Catherine, an AWOL basic-training-graduate, whose parents helped build the initial plans for the Dome.

As unrest inside of Baltimore grows throughout the days-long lockdown, Marco, Catherine, and Jamal take the fight directly to the chief of police. But the city is corrupt from the inside out, and it's going to take everything they have to survive.

Survive the Dome Reviews

3.5
“Slow start but does get interesting. MMC is annoying I much preferred the side characters. The ending was ok, it left me with anticipation for the possibilities of the characters however I don’t think I would actually read the sequel just because i struggled a bit getting through this one.”
“Rating: 4/5⭐ Spice: 0/5🌶️ Quick Summary: Set in Baltimore during a protest that is abruptly sealed off by a militarized dome, Survive the Dome by Kosoko Jackson follows Jamal Lawson, an aspiring journalist who arrives to document a rally against police brutality. When the city is locked down with no way in or out, Jamal is left stranded and forced to navigate escalating unrest and danger. Teaming up with a hacker and a soldier with ties to the Dome’s creation, he begins to uncover the truth behind the corrupt system trapping them. Read if you like: ⚡️young adult dystopian ⚡️BIPOC representation ⚡️social commentary woven into dystopian setups ⚡️real-world issues amplified ⚡️advanced technology **SPOILER FREE REVIEW** Short statement: A great dystopian twist on real-world issues. Things I liked: I loved the voice and tone of the main character, Jamal. He had such a young, innocent vibe that lightened a lot of situations. Mind you, he also had a great head on his shoulders. He questioned the right things while simultaneously trying to go with the flow. It was a very interesting balance. The romance in this book is exactly what I like. Basically, no spice at all, but genuine care and affection between the two characters. They are seriously so cute together. Things I didn’t like: This author early likes the sentences "I bite so hard on my tongue that I taste blo0d/metal/copper" and "It feels like BLANK hours have passed, but really it's only been BLANK minutes". Say it one time: wow, that's a good sentence/description. Say it twice: oh, I think this was used already. Say it more than that: I'm sick of it and roll my eyes every time it comes up. I will admit there are a few plot holes and some character choices that make no sense, but I understood the overall message of the book, and I feel like more of these books need to have time in the spotlight. If this is/was a series, would I continue? it doesn't need another book Do I recommend it? yes Who would I recommend it to? anyone looking for a "contemporary" dystopian book with BIPOC representation **Content and Structure Overview** Age Category: young adult Genre: dystopian, science fiction Series/Standalone: standalone Is there profanity? yes F-word? yes POV: single POV, first person, present tense POV Character(s): 17-year-old male (Jamal Lawson) Romance: MM romance Spice: 0/5🌶️ Is there heavy kissing? no, just a few kisses that have little description Wandering hands/mouths? no Is there below-the-belt shenanigans? no Is there a fade-to-black scene? no Is there on-page horizontal tango? no If I had a kid in MIDDLE school, would I let them read this? no, due to trigger warnings and profanity If I had a kid in HIGH school, would I let them read this? yes, just be mindful of the profanity and trigger warnings Book-to-screen adaptation? no Trigger Warnings: de@th and de@d bodies, police vi0lence, slur words toward black and brown minorities, c0nfinement, bl0od, bodily injuries, physical and gün vi0lence Quotes Worth Remembering: “It's not justice when the courts play in favor of the accused.” “But in the long run, survival isn't what's important; proving those in power can be thwarted is. Because ideas never die - that's one thing I've learned from my mom when she talks about our history as Black people. People may not live on, but the impressions they leave last forever.””
