A 2021 Nebula Award Nominee!

One woman will travel to the stars and beyond to save her beloved in this lyrical space opera that reimagines The Little Mermaid.

Gene-edited human clans have scattered throughout the galaxy, adapting themselves to environments as severe as the desert and the sea. Atuale, the daughter of a Sea-Clan lord, sparked a war by choosing her land-dwelling love and rejecting her place among her people. Now her husband and his clan are dying of a virulent plague, and Atuale’s sole hope for finding a cure is to travel off-planet. The one person she can turn to for help is the black-market mercenary known as the World Witch—and Atuale’s former lover. Time, politics, bureaucracy, and her own conflicted desires stand between Atuale and the hope for her adopted clan.

Thinking Face“There were some parts that had really beautiful writing and evocative imagery, and there were some interesting plot elements, but overall the story was really boring and the ending wasn't very good.”
“A very quick read with some interesting bits. I liked the pacing and characters. A somewhat surreal and floaty race against time with a satisfying ending.”
“Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. "Atuale left the sea to kiss the mountains and the sky. Of course she wants to embrace the stars as well." A queer sci-fi retelling of "The Little Mermaid"? Count me in! Atuale, the daughter of a Sea-Clan lord, left her home and family to be with her land-dwelling lover. For years, she had left her past behind until her husband and his clan fell victim to a devastating plague. To save them, Atuale must seek the help of the World Witch, her former lover. The premise of "Sun-Daughters, Sea-Daughters" immediately intrigued me, and I'm thrilled to say that the book exceeded my expectations. In fact, it was so well-written and even better than I had anticipated. First of all, I really adore the writing style. While I understand that it might not work for everyone, I truly love how poetic it was, and it didn't hinder my reading experience at all. The worldbuilding and glimpses into the book's expansive universe and diverse cultures were captivating, although I do wish there were more details and elaboration on these aspects. However, considering it is a novella, I understand the author's decision not to delve further into them. The plot itself is pretty simple and clearly influenced by the original fairytale, but it feels refreshing in its own right. This is undoubtedly one of the finest fairytale retellings I’ve ever read. The pacing is excellent, and last but not least, I love the representation and how everything blends together seamlessly. To sum it up, "Sun-Daughters, Sea-Daughters" is a captivating debut novella that takes an age-old fairytale and transforms it into something unique. I highly recommend it to sci-fi enthusiasts and anyone seeking a quick, engaging read. I finished this book in just over two hours, and I desperately didn't want it to end. I'm looking forward to Aimee Ogden's future works, and I hope we get to see more of this fascinating world in the future.”
“I usually don’t give one star ratings because I’ll DNF before I waste my time but since this novella was just a little over 100 pages, I decided to power through. The best and most interesting part of this was the space travel & difference species/races. I also am a suckers for queer lit & love stories but everything else from the story, the characters, the pacing, the overall vibe of the book. I wasn’t feeling it.”
