“In reading Sugar on the Bones by Joe R. Lansdale, one thing sticks out to me : characterization. The characters of Hap & Leonard have fantastic chemistry and reading their banter throughout this story was truly a treat for this reader. These characters are well-rounded, and I felt that they could have taken that personality right off that page into becoming real.
Maybe it’s my completist attitude, but I definitely think that readers looking into the Hap & Leonard series should start with the first book in the series, which is Savage Season. As much as I enjoyed Sugar on the Bones, I do think I would take more from it if I had more of their adventures to stand on.
With that said, however, I recommend this read for lovers of mysteries. I recommend it extra if you like having some banter with your mystery!”
