Jerome Sugar learned the art of baking in his grandma’s bakery, also called Sugar, on historic Perdita Street in San Francisco. He supplies baked goods to the Lost and Found Bookshop across the street.

When the restaurant that shares his commercial kitchen loses its longtime tenant, a newcomer moves in: Margot Salton, a barbecue master from Texas.

Margot isn’t exactly on the run, but she needs a fresh start. She’s taken care of herself her whole life, pulling herself up by her fingernails to recover from trauma, and her dream has been to open a restaurant somewhere far, far from Texas. The shared kitchen with Jerome's Sugar bakery is the perfect setup: a state-of-the-art kitchen and a vibrant neighborhood popular with tourists and locals.

Margot instantly takes to Jerome’s mother, the lively, opinionated Ida. The older woman proves to be a good mentor, and Margot is drawn to Jerome. Despite their different backgrounds their attraction is powerful—even though Jerome worries that Margot will simply move on from him once she’s found some peace and stability. But just as she starts to relax into a happy new future, Margot’s past in Texas comes back to haunt her…

Anxious Face with sweat“Read this as a palate cleanser, trying to bridge between genres. Rather heavy in the political for what was more or less advertised as a sweet romance. Half to three quarters of it was *not* sweet romance. And, maybe an unpopular opinion, the issues presented came off rather forced and condescending - can’t relate to the minority until, oh wait, you can! (As a non-specific example.) Or the hypocrisy of ‘ew, mom a “white dude”’, meanwhile he wants to date a white chick cause, what? She’s hot! And for the record, any man comes up silently behind you in a dark alleyway at night and you’re going to karate chop them. That ain’t really a race specific thing…in general. Not to mention it drove me nuts reading the same sentence three separate times that ‘who knew it would be the final draft before things got messy’. Who edited this? Anyway…just wasn’t what I thought it was, not ny cup of tea and at the same time I do not think it did justice to some of the issues that it was trying to convey. In my humble opinion that you did not ask for - but maybe ya did cause you’re reading this, right? - is it reads very ‘pick me’.”
“I thought this was an excellent book!! Some hard subject matter but women who suffer these type of traumas are all too often revictimized over and over!!”
“okay”
