Stolen in Death

By J. D. Robb
Stolen in Death by J. D. Robb digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

A violent death and a vault of stolen treasures has Eve Dallas struggling to solve crimes old and new in the next thriller in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series.

A blow to the head with a block of amethyst has left multibillionaire Nathan Barrister dead—while nearby, a vault, its door ajar, sits filled with priceless paintings, jewelry, and other treasures. Lieutenant Eve Dallas’s husband, Roarke—who misspent his youth in Ireland as a scrappy thief—recognizes at least two stolen pieces among the hoard. The crime scene suggests a burglar caught in the act. But only one item seems to be missing.

Then it’s revealed that the vault had actually belonged to the victim’s late father—and no one in the household knew it was there until a recent remodeling project exposed it. To protect the family name and business, they explain to Eve, they’d been looking for a way to return the ill-gotten gains anonymously and avoid the police. But now the police are all over their elegant house, and have a bigger, bloodier mystery to solve.

By all accounts, Nathan Barrister was a good man, a generous employer, a devoted husband and father. As for his father—he clearly had secrets. Now it’s up to Eve and her team to find out if those secrets got Nathan killed—and if it was a crime of passion or revenge.

“It started off good. I do like Eve Dallas, her smarts and wit. However, this one just didn't land. I think the problem was it was too long for what it was. There was not enough mystery. The story dragged on. I felt like Eve had it figured out pretty quickly but there was so much extra that didn't really add anything. Obviously we want Eve to solve the case, but here the evidence kept being repeated without really adding more each time and then came together so neatly. It was boring. I think maybe 25% of the book could have been edited out and the result would have been the same. Thank you NetGalley for the arc.”
“4.75 Stars! I love this series so much! It has become one of my all time favorite comfort series to read and revisit! I was slightly worried when I realized that Magdalena was coming back in this book because I truly detested her in the previous book she was in. I thought this book really gave Roarke a redemption in how he handled the issues with her compared to the first time we met her. I really enjoyed the story and flew through the book so fast! I love when you lose yourself in the story so it feels like you forget that you're reading and that's exactly what it felt like reading this book! I did wish that we had a little more involvement of the side characters as I have grown to love them as well throughout this series. I listened to the audio in tandem with reading the book and I still love the voices that the narrator does just as much as all the previous books! I really hope she narrates all the future books in this series as well! Overall, I loved it and will continue to read this series for as the author continues to write it! Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and Macmillan Audio for the digital advanced copy and the advanced listener's copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own!”
“I was extremely lucky to be given an ARC from Netgalley. All of my fangirl reviewer dreams have come true!!! I've said in previous reviews for In Death books that there is a marked and deliberate softening to Eve's character that is so gratifying to follow. The mark of a master author is in being able to build characters that grow and evolve just like real people, and J.D. has proven time and again that she is indeed a master. Her ability to create and maintain such complicated and intricately woven relationships across the span of a series this lengthy is a little mind-blowing, but she does it so well that it feels natural and easy to follow them. Eve's investigation into what appears to be a botched burglary that ends in the murder of a wealthy businessman uncovers more than just a vault full of priceless stolen art and jewelry. With sticky connections to Roarke's checkered past, Eve knows she walks a thin line between protecting her badge and protecting the man she loves. That line gets even thinner when someone she thought long gone shows up in connection with the investigation, putting her in an even more precarious position. I didn't think J.D. could hit me with a curveball I didn't see coming, but she got me with this one. Robb's meticulous attention to detail once again shines through, and I really enjoy the way she delves into the routine police procedures and makes them entertaining to read. Another solid installment to an amazing series, and I'm extremely grateful I was given the opportunity to read it!”
“Omg, I got the ARC copy of Stolen in Death!!!! See me jumping for joy?? Anyway, we have another great story in the Eve Dallas anf Roarke story, and I am here for it. This murder was a good whodunit with se shockers and blasts from the past. It brings in all the great characters you love and appreciate, I highly recommend this series. It could read as a stand alone, but I believe you get far more out of it if you read the series. Thank you to Net Galley and St Martin's Press for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.”
