By Kate Callaghan
Stepmother by Kate Callaghan digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Before she was Cinderella's stepmother, she was Hélène Longe, the beautiful only daughter of a prestigious Parisian family. Her mother and father doted on her, catering to her every wish-but just as Hélène was about to make her societal debut, a fatal carriage accident altered her fate, leaving her penniless at just fifteen.

Faced with debts she can no longer pay, Hélène is given a choice: work for the seamstress she owes, or wait for her unknown uncle to decide her future. Working to pay off her debt in the seamstress's atelier, she dreams of her former life. With the help of her fairy godmother, Hélène is given another choice.

Love or wealth?

But the choice isn't as simple as it appears. Hélène knows what she needs to survive, but where will her decisions lead her?

Be careful what you wish for...

Stepmother is a stand-alone novella, but it is part of the Hellish Fairytale Universe. This book is not intended to be historically accurate. It is set in the fictional human world of the Hellish Universe, which we also see in Towerwood.

Stepmother Reviews

4.5
“Ever wondered who the evil stepmother was before everything? This was so interesting and I read it in one sitting! Always be carful with what you wish for. Helene isnt a good person, and I don't feel sorry for her. She did all this to her self and he daughters. I received an ARC, and I write a honest review.”
“Ok wow! This is such a good fairytale retelling. In this novella, we find out how Cinderella’s stepmother came to be. And let me tell you, for a destitute noble, her character shows promise towards changing but… you’ll have to read it for yourself.”
“A great villain origin story - I would like to thank the author for the eARC - When Hélène's parents died in an accident, her entire life changed. From a noble girl in a prestigious family, she was left with nothing but debts. With no other choice, she works for the seamstress she owes, dreaming of her former life. When her fairy godmother offers her a choice between love and wealth, Hélène changes her life once more. I love a good origin story and this one was truly amazing. I loved how Hélène evolved throughout the story with everything that life throws her way. It was really interesting to discover. The story was beautiful and unfolded easily from page to page, making it very pleasant to read. I usually don't like short stories because I feel frustrated, but it didn't happen with this one. The author managed to conduct a story from start to finish - or is it truly the end? - and kept me hooked through the entirety of it. The writing was really good as well, addictive and immersive. I quite enjoyed the touch of magic and how everything links out to the Cinderella tale we all know. I'm excited to see what's next in this universe. I really recommend if you're looking for a good and short story. "Love won't save me. I can save myself." TW: violence, death, sexual assault, depression, grief, accident, abuse”
“First book I read this year yay! Loved the writing style. It was very interesting, different, and short.”
