Stef Soto feels her parents are overly protective and feels embarrassed that they are always picking her up in the family’s food truck - Tía Perla. Stef is just trying to navigate middle school with minimal embarrassment, and the taco truck is cramping her style.
I read this with my kid as a One School, One Book project for Read Across America. This book was cute, but it was all over the place. On the one hand I really appreciated the grounded nature of this book. The pop star doesn’t show up at the school dance. The city council doesn’t unanimously fail all the regulations on the food trucks. The teen doesn’t get to go to the concert… but… I prefer my stories fantastical. There was a lot of heart in this one, but it was a little too grounded in reality for my liking.”
